Why most apps look wrong on it

A reflective display shows you the light already in the room, which rewards a very particular set of choices and punishes the opposite ones. Pure white backgrounds glare. Thin gray text on gray cards disappears. Animations smear. An interface built for a bright, saturated, backlit panel ends up washed out and busy on a screen that behaves more like paper.

Why it works well here

• Warm paper, not white. The light theme is a cream ground with near black ink, which is what a reflective panel renders best.
• An amber accent. The one color in the interface sits in the same warm register as the Daylight DC-1 amber backlight, so nothing fights the screen at night.
• No motion in the reader.Nothing slides, fades, or reflows while you’re reading, and the glow on the landing page switches itself off when your system asks for reduced motion.
• Text you can size. Five steps from smaller to much larger, and the column widens with the text so a line never collapses to four words.
• One serif, one measure. Articles are set in a single reading face at a comfortable line length, the way a book is.

Nothing to install

Lantern is a web app. Open it in the DC-1 browser, sign in, and add it to your home screen if you want it to launch like an app. There’s no store listing to wait on and nothing to sideload. The same account and the same reading positions follow you to a phone or a laptop.

How it fits into a day

Find something worth reading on a laptop during the day, paste the link into Lantern, and it’s waiting on the tablet that evening or outside the next morning, without the ads and popups that make a reflective screen feel like hard work.
