Lantern and
Instapaper.
Of everything in this category, Instapaper is the app Lantern has the most in common with, and the one I'm least interested in attacking. It has been doing the calm, uncluttered thing since 2008 and it still does it well.
Where they agree
Both treat a read later app as a reading app. Both strip the page down to the article. Both have a free tier that’s actually usable instead of a countdown to an upsell. Neither is trying to become a knowledge management system. If you’re happy on Instapaper, that’s a completely reasonable place to be, and I’m not going to invent a crisis to rescue you from.
Where they differ
- The look. Instapaper is neutral by design, a white page and a serif. Lantern commits to a warm cream ground, one display face, one reading face, and an amber accent. That’s a taste decision rather than a better one, and it’s the main reason to prefer either.
- Reading preferences. Lantern offers warm and dark themes, adjustable type, and a quiet reader. If you use a reflective screen, see how to open it on a Daylight DC-1.
- Maturity. Instapaper has years of features behind it: notes, speed reading, Kobo and Kindle sending, a browser extension, and native mobile apps. Lantern is newer and smaller. Both let you keep a passage while you read; Instapaper’s tools around that go further.
- Shape. Instapaper has web, iOS, and Android apps. Lantern has web plus iPhone and iPad, with Android browsers using the web app.
- Price. Both are free to use. Instapaper sells a Premium subscription for additional features. Lantern has nothing to sell.
How to choose
Stay on Instapaper if you rely on notes, Kindle or Kobo workflows, or its native Android app. Lantern supports Android through the browser. Basic highlights exist on both sides; the gap is the tools around them.
Try Lantern if the reading page itself is the part you care about and you want one that feels warmer, or if you read on a screen that a bright white page fights with. Both can be tried free, so this isn’t a decision that needs defending.
