Lantern and
Readwise Reader.

These are not really the same kind of product, and picking between them is mostly a question of whether you want a reading app or a research system. Here is the honest version.

What Readwise Reader is good at

It is the most capable tool in this category and it is not close. Articles, newsletters, PDFs, ebooks, RSS feeds and video transcripts all land in one inbox. Highlights sync into Readwise proper, where they get resurfaced on a schedule and pushed into Obsidian, Notion or Anki. There is a serious keyboard-driven interface, filtered views, and AI features layered on top.

If you read to build something, notes, a newsletter, a thesis, a second brain, that pipeline is the product and it works. Lantern does not compete with it and is not trying to.

What Lantern is good at

Opening a saved article and reading it. That is the whole surface. There is no inbox to triage, no view to configure, no shortcut list to learn, and nothing to migrate into afterwards. You paste a link, and later you read a clean page.

For a lot of people that is the entire job. The reason Pocket had tens of millions of users and Readwise Reader does not is that most people saving an article are not building a knowledge base. They just want the thing without the pop-ups.

The differences that actually decide it

  • Price. Readwise Reader is a paid subscription, bundled with Readwise. Lantern is free. Check their site for current pricing rather than trusting a number on a competitor's page.
  • Scope. Reader takes newsletters, PDFs, ebooks, RSS and video. Lantern takes web articles and text you paste in.
  • Highlights. Reader's are the centre of the product and export everywhere. Lantern has none yet, though they are the next feature after import.
  • Learning curve. Reader rewards learning it. Lantern has nothing to learn, which is either the point or a limitation depending on who you are.
  • Import. Reader imports from most places. Lantern cannot yet, so moving a large library means pasting links.

How to choose

Pick Readwise Reader if your highlights need to end up somewhere else, if you read PDFs and newsletters as much as articles, or if you want the deepest tool available and are happy to pay for it.

Pick Lantern if you tried a tool like that, used maybe a tenth of it, and went back to just wanting a clean page. There is no trial to start and nothing to cancel, so trying it costs a paste.
